B.Sc. Nautical Science

B.Sc. Nautical Science is a 3-year undergraduate program designed to train students for a career as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy. The course combines classroom learning with practical sea training to develop skilled maritime professionals ready for international waters.


1. Eligibility Criteria

Academic Qualification:

  • 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM)

  • Minimum 60% aggregate in PCM (varies by institute)

  • 50% aggregate accepted for reserved categories in some institutes

Age Limit:

  • 17–25 years at the time of admission

Medical Fitness:

  • As per DG Shipping standards

  • Eyesight: 6/6 in both eyes without glasses (no color blindness)


2. Course Duration & Structure

Total Duration: 3 Years (6 Semesters)

Training Breakdown:

  • 📘 1 Year: Academic study at a maritime institute

  • 🔥 6 Months: Pre-sea training (includes firefighting, survival, etc.)

  • 🚢 18 Months: Onboard ship training as a Deck Cadet

  • GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress Safety System)


4. Certification & Licensing

After course completion, students must obtain:

  • Certificate of Competency (CoC) – DG Shipping

  • STCW Certification

  • 🎓 Appear for Second Mate (FG) Exam to become a licensed Deck Officer


5. Career Prospects

Career Progression Path:
Deck Cadet → Third Officer → Second Officer → Chief Officer → Captain (Master Mariner)
